My name is Laura Aston.  I’ve been a “Step Aerobics” instructor for over 30 years!  This is a recent picture of me in my workout outfit!

We Boomers are the largest population segment in America – 75 Million people.  That’s 29% of the entire US residents.  And at this time in our lives, we have the most income, and the most opportunities compared to any other time in our lives.  Plus we live in a world of opportunities – despite what economic cycle the economy might be in.  We should be the healthiest, most fit, most successful generation in history!

HOWEVER – We are not as healthy or as fit as we should be.

And this is so obvious.  I go to the supermarket, I walk through the mall, and I see so many of us, carrying around 20 – 30- 40 pounds more than we should.  Some of us are downright obese!  We just don’t look or feel as good as we should!

AND this is a critical time in our lives!

We can’t just coast like we did when we were in our 20’s or 30’s and still be okay.

We are slipping to the threshold of a downward spiral, like the edge of a black hole – a tragic black hole of poor health, degeneration, and slow endless pain.  And if we slip much further, we will fall faster and faster down into that hole – and soon it will be impossible to get out.

Why so tragic?

Because it’s simply a choice.  We can easily choose right now to remain fit and active well into our 80′s and 90′s, and some of us well beyond that.  And even when we get sick, we can get well so much faster. Yes. We can enjoy a long life full of health and abundance!

Guys, this does not depend upon genetics, or chance ,or fate.  We simply choose.

But we Boomers are good at Excuses!

We have a lot of rationalizations why we can’t get fit — just now.  I know, because I was always coming up with lots of reasons why I could not workout, or eat right… at least not right now.  And these are all good excuses!

-    I can’t workout this morning, I have to get to work – but I will do it before I go to bed.

-    But I can’t do it now before bed, because it’s too late.  And oh, it was a stressful day!

-    Oh, my spouse needs my help right now.

-    Oh, the kids took the car, I can’t go to the gym.

-    Oh, I forgot to wash my workout clothes, I have nothing to ware.

-    Oh, I strained my back moving the coach, I can’t workout — for the next two weeks.

Well one day, after finding myself 40 pounds overweight and getting sick all the time,

I realized, actually there is only ONE answer for all of these excuses:

Every Day, in Some Way, Simply GET MOVING! – NO EXCUSES!

Look. Even if your feet are in bandages — like my brother who recently had an accident — he still found a way to at least work out his upper body, and get his heart rate moving.  Even if your back hurts, you can get on that stationary bike – it’s great for low back problems.  I had major back surgery, and I found a way to move the day after the surgery.  And I found that when I got my heart rate up every day, and I healed very fast. Both me and my doctor were quite surprised.

  • Running the Staircase
